Then came the companies where everyone smoked. There was a kind of fashion, they say, if you don't smoke, then you're not cool. It's all different now, but it was different before. Thus, the habit became more and more entrenched in smokers. I smoked whenever possible, and the possibility of being burned by an adult only accelerated the process.
But when I was 16, I had a click in my head and decided to quit smoking. Exactly, suddenly, at will. To be honest, it wasn't for a long time, but there was a positive point. A few weeks later, I changed my mind and said that I could smoke when I drank. That is, I do not smoke when I am awake, but I can smoke in meetings. And I probably didn't stop there, as you probably already think. Although it had a positive effect - I smoked a little for 4 years.
However, this method has a major disadvantage. Because of the strong connection between smoking and alcohol in my mind, I was drawn to drinking every time I wanted to smoke.
But I didn't stop there either. During my third year at university, I got a job in a taxi and lit a cigarette. I smoked almost a pack a day and drank more. And this lasted until the fall of 2017. That is, I had about 10 years of experience as a smoker.
How I Quit Smoking Spontaneously
Friends, in this chapter I will tell you how I passed the smoking cessation period and then the best way to do it. Therefore, if you are lazy to read, you can move on to the next chapter. A lot of people just ask me how I handle it, but it's inconvenient to be smart because the method is so simple.
So, in October 2017, I woke up in the morning after a busy meeting and felt bad. I didn't get enough sleep, I had a severe headache from the alcohol I drank the day before, and the vestibular apparatus was not working properly. I smoked and got in the car. The car was full and there was an unpleasant smell of herringbone. On top of that, I started to get sick. In general, a number of negative emotions.
At that moment, I got sick and my mouth tasted like a recent cigarette. I looked out the window: the beautiful autumn air outside, the sun shining and the leaves falling from the trees. Then I was filled with very pleasant memories of my childhood associated with this special weather and a similar scene. Inside, I felt good outside the window, a time when I felt great as a child and not like in the current car. What did I do then?
3 My instant step
- I just associated a strong pain and negativity with a smoker at the moment. And I felt with my whole body that now I feel so bad for him. It was not difficult to do, because there was an unpleasant taste of tobacco in the mouth. Sustained shortness of breath and money costs have been added.
- Then I looked out the window again and completely associated my good feelings with quitting smoking. Still, it was not difficult to do so, since I had never smoked since I was a child and felt very good. In addition, I added the unpleasant feeling that I could safely climb the stairs without smoking and not suffocate. I also added the money benefits: if I don't buy cigarettes, I can buy something useful for myself.
- At the peak of my emotional state, I made a clear, conscious decision to quit smoking altogether.
All this took about 10 seconds. The emotional swing was so strong that I immediately threw the bag in the trash.
However, these steps will not be enough in the long run, so I had to apply a few more steps that worked successfully. You will read a little about them below.
Now for the fun part. I accidentally quit smoking. I did not prepare for this decision, I did not go to the doctors, I did not buy cigarettes, plaster, spray and chewing gum for other nonsense. A few months later, I started reading Tony Robbins' book on self-improvement, and I found these methods that I unknowingly applied!
6 steps to get rid of addiction
These principles are based on neuro-associative conditioning. Here they are:
- Make a clear, informed decision about why you want to quit smoking. You want it, not your loved ones.
- Use Leverage: Combine intense emotional pleasure with quitting smoking and intense pain if you don't at the moment. Do something like I did or think of another way to do it. The most important thing is to feel strong emotions and associate them with smoking.
- It is necessary to break the old behavior. For example, at work I would go to the smoking room and discuss work with my coworkers. After quitting, I began associating with them in "non-smoking" places.
- Create a new alternative. Friends, this step is the most important if you are looking to the long term. The fact is that just quitting smoking is not enough. You need to replace the pleasure that smoking brings you with something else. Something that will not give side effects. For example, instead of smoking with my friends, I watched an interesting series or drank tea. You need to look at the reasons why you smoke and think of an incentive alternative to smoking for yourself. Let's say you quit smoking when you started to worry. Exercising or reaching a short-term goal helps a lot.
- You should do the installation "forever" instead of "at least a week". And repeat the above steps until you get used to it. It took me about 3 weeks to do this.
- Come up with a reward system. This is a very important step. You should know that if you do not smoke today, you have the opportunity to buy something small. if it’s a week, the thing is bigger; if a month, then a vacation abroad. I just did it - I constantly encouraged myself until the habit completely disappeared.
